Situated on Lakeview Drive at Bicester Arc is ‘Turning’ by acclaimed sculptor Charlotte Mayer (1929-2022) with Pangolin Editions (founded 1985). Standing 3m tall, the sculpture adds lasting interest to the Office Park through its strong visual and emotional presence.
Made of bronze, the sculpture represents undulating wings, providing visual symbolism of a journey through life. As you move past the work, different perspectives reveal different shapes and meanings. The effect is powerful, with its use of movement characteristic of Mayer’s usual work. The artist also takes inspiration from the natural world, meditating on the rhythmic structures and patterns found in nature. Her outdoor sculptures sit in harmony with their environment; sunlight reflecting on the piece becomes part of its meaning.
Born in Prague and emigrating to England in 1939, Charlotte Mayer defied expectations as one of the only women to study sculpture at Goldsmiths and the Royal College of Art in the late 1940’s. Her affinity with sculpture began in childhood and continued to be honed for the rest of her life. Meditation was an essential part of her creative life, reflected in the strength and tranquillity her art captures.
Fitting in well with an architectural setting, Mayer’s sculptures have been commissioned by a number of commercial institutions worldwide. ‘Turning’ was commissioned by Cherwell District Council and was unveiled by the artist in 2016.
The enjoyment of park occupiers is a main consideration in the development of Bicester Arc. Featuring a 15-acre eco park with walking routes for the exclusive use of park occupiers, the picturesque setting will support employee wellbeing. ‘Turning’ creates a welcoming gateway to the development, which honours this philosophy, making Bicester Arc more than just a place to work.
